November 2018 – January 2019 – Protea Bank

Steve Spurgin sent this report together with a video of some of his shark encounters.

My South African Dive report

I found this to be the best shark dive centre KwaZulu-Natal

I had the privilege to spend three months (11/12/01-2019-20) diving Protea Bank with Aqua Planet.

I went through the PADI Advanced and Rescue Diver training programme which I found to be thorough and very competently organised by Kim and her Dive Masters. The outstanding advantage of diving with this team is the vast amount of local knowledge the boat skippers and dive team have to enable you to have a very enjoyable and successful shark dive. All launches are from the beach through the surf which is fun! I had the pleasure to see the following: shoaling hammerheads, Ragged-Tooth sharks, Bull shark, Potato Bass, Loggerhead Sea Turtle, and a Ribbontail Ray. On my last dive, I caught the Giant Sandshark with a GoPro2.

Protea Banks

I found the dive hire equipment and ribs to be professionally maintained and serviced.

Cost for a rib dive with hire equipment is 600 Rands (£32) within a discounted dive package.  Accommodation and dive packages can be found on the web site  https://www.aquaplanet.co.za/ recommend asking for a group discount. Best local Pub Buccaners £2.50 a pint
