Well, it
looked like a good opportunity to dive this reasonably large wreck,
particularly as we had the dive boat to ourselves this time. A majority
decision was to dive this freighter that ran into rocks some years
previously and, as is generally the nature of these events, conveniently
sank to the bottom of the sea a few metres off the rocky shore.
After entering
the water from the prow of the boat (a jump that felt like 5 m) and
avoiding the RIB and various buoys and ropes we descended into a milky
plankton soup which went rather black after 10m.
We had gone
down as a 4 with a cunning plan to split into two groups of 2 but in the
poor conditions and depth of 30+ metres 2 of the team returned to the
surface. I continued with Celina and we both greatly enjoyed the vast
area of rusty decking all the way down to the split in the hull and back
again to the shot rope.
So - cold,
rusty, devoid of life, poor viz. An unfortunate decision but it could
have been a fine dive in better conditions. The highlight was a bit of
sightseeing by the skipper on the way back and the absence of the French
displaying both their derrieres and lack of dive boat manners.
