Thursday 29 May
2003 saw six of us
travelling to Plymouth to get a day's diving in before the weekend.
Bryan, Andrew, Tracey, Rita and George
preparing
for the next day's diving!
We
dived with Deep Blue Diving on the Seeker (wonderful lift at the
back!). SMB's - the losing and recovery of - became a feature of
this trip. No details so as not to embarrass anyone (especially
the author!)
Friday
saw us 'warming up' on the James Eagan Layne. As always on this
wreck there was lots to see with viz of around 6m. Huge areas of
dead men's fingers and anemones, large spider crabs and of course the
usual shoals of bib.
The
afternoon saw us on the Glen Strath Allen. Another lovely dive
over a variety of surfaces - wreck, kelp, sandy gravel. A
cuttlefish was very obliging in changing colour for us.
Our numbers had doubled
by the evening with others joining who had not been able to take the extra
day off work and a good meal at a local restaurant was the perfect end to a
hot sunny day.
Saturday started with a
great dive on the Persier - down the shot straight onto the boilers.
Viz was good again and those of us diving on Nitrox had the benefit
of the extra bottom time without going into deco.
Lunch on the boat was enjoyed by
all. We then went back to the James Eagan Layne to enable
Lindsey, one of our trainees, to enjoy her second 'proper' dive, having
missed the Persier because of the depth. As on Friday, there was
plenty to see in good viz.

While the Chairman
and DO were taking their responsibilities seriously,
some activity was
going on elsewhere!
Changing bottles for
the second dive
Tony had booked us a table at a local
pub (well remembered from last trip but the name escapes me!) so it was off along the country lanes to relax after a hard day
We woke up on Sunday to a rather more
overcast and windy day so plans were changed and we decided to remain in
more sheltered waters. Kitting up in the harbour we went just
outside for a drift over Tinker's reef. Current was quite strong
although it was possible to get out of this when down in the
gullies. Number of dogfish swimming in the open, or just lazing on
the seabed. Lots to see for those interested in the marine
life.
Back into the harbour for lunch and then we decided to try
diving the fort itself. More to see than was expected so long as
the seabed was not disturbed (clouds of silt/mud). Various bits of
wrecks, including an old fishing boat. Easy dive to round of the
weekend.
Thanks
to Tracey for arranging the trip. Next trip to Mount Batten has been booked for 2-4 July 2004 so if you
are interested get in touch with Tracey - places will be going fast.
