BUDC News - January/February 2008

27 February - Photo/Video evening

Thanks to Tim for organising the evening and for  Paul's help - particularly in providing some of the nosh!

They were all really good photo presentations, everybody must have worked hard to put the presentations together, so thanks go to the presenters. We had shots from the Banstead pool to Bonaire/Plymouth/Red Sea and beyond.  Only a couple of people were embarrassed!

We also raised £50 for The Royal Marsden in memory of Rita Batelle  and a cheque and letter has been sent.  Thanks to all.  (see reply letter from Royal Marsden)

3 February - Dive to 30 metres in 30ºC water with 30+m viz!! - Dive in the SETT tank at Portsmouth

Dive Brief, then ascend 10 stories to start the dive.  Luckily there was a lift to take us to the top of the tank

Not for those who don't like heights - what viz!!

Craig supervised the dive and carefully watched the cameras to make sure everyone behaved.

Kit up, climb into the tank and then a slow descend to the bottom.  Max 15 mins bottom time and then a gentle ascent, 3 min safety stop at 5/6m before bubbling up to the surface.  Everyone was amazed at how little gas was used - wouldn't it be great if diving out of Littlehampton was as warm, clear and easy.

12 January - Dive to 41 metres without getting wet! - Visit to the London Hyperbaric chamber at Whipps Cross Hospital

First dive of the year!  5 minute descent to 40m, all had the need to clear ears constantly, narcosis kicked in at the bottom - Mickey Mouse voice distortion and the shocking discovery that we were unable to whistle at this depth.  Several small sharks were spotted along with a toy kangaroo, was the narcosis causing hallucinations?

A 4 minute ascent  to 9m where we switched to 100% O2 as our deco gas for 2 minutes then up to 6m for a further 5 minute safety stop.   All divers surfaced fit and well……and dry!  What a great way to start the 2008 diving season.

Read the full account in Paul's dive log.

Outside the chamber

Inside the chamber

How deep

Pre-dive briefing The only way we want to see the inside of a recompression chamber Make sure we log that dive!
